Referral/ Qualification Process
Eligibility Requirements include:

I.  Screening

Once students are referred, they will complete a screening process.

Grades K-5: Students must score at or above the 85th percentile of the CogAT Screener or 95th percentile on STAR Reading and Math or MAP.

II.  Formal Assessment

Students who pass the screener move on to the formal assessment.

In accordance with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education(DESE) guidelines, students must qualify in three out of the following four areas.

General Mental Ability

An IQ Test, such as the WISC V, will be administered. Students must score at the 95th percentile or higher.

Creativity/Critical Thinking/Problem Solving

A creativity/ critical thinking test, such as the Williams Scale, will be administered.  Students must score at the 95th percentile or higher.

Academic Ability

Must score at the 95th percentile on two subtests of a school-wide academic performance measure.

Portfolio and Classroom Observation

Parents and students will be given the portfolio requirements when the child is referred. When they have accumulated the proper documents, the Challenge teacher will do a formal observation of the child in his/her regular classroom setting and will collect and evaluate the portfolio.

Referral Procedures

Teacher referral window for grades 3-5 will be open September 30 - October 24. Teacher referral window for grades K-2 will be open December 1 - December 20.There will be two referral windows during the school year, once during the fall semester and once during the spring semester. During these designated windows, teachers may fill out the referral form. Parents may request for their child’s teacher to fill out the referral form.
